Twelve works built from grain, density and colour temperature rather than from figure and ground, so that each surface reads as something that formed rather than something that was composed. Printed on baryta paper, which holds the darker passages without closing them up. Editions of eight with one artist’s proof.
Nothing in this group is placed. The system works with grain, density and colour temperature, and the composition is whatever those three settle into once the process has run out. That is the reason the surfaces read as mineral rather than atmospheric, and the reason they reward being looked at from close range as well as from across a room.
Baryta was chosen over rag for the same reason: it holds the dark passages open instead of letting them close into a single black. The sequence runs from the most mineral of the twelve to the most legibly landscape, which is where it was decided the group should end.
